A crest made by Nouveau Enterprises in 1972 for the poodle. The informative text, which is also pictured below, reads:

POODLE

A very active, intelligent, and elegant-looking dog, squarely built, well-proportioned, moving soundly and carrying himself proudly. Properly clipped in the traditional fashion and carefully groomed, the Poodle has about him an air of distinction and dignity peculiar to himself. (From the Standard)

HISTORY

While the Poodle has been considered for many years the National Dog of France, Germany and Russia also lay claim to the beginning heritage of this splendid breed.

The antiquity of the Poodle is well established. Many illustrations of the breed have been found on Roman statues and tombs dating back to the first centuries before Christ.

The Poodle appears in three varieties: Standard, Miniature and Toy. The Standard Poodle is considered the oldest variety. This dog was used extensively in several countries as a water-bird retriever. He is still a splendid worker in this respect. The name of the breed itself comes from the German PUDEL meaning “swamp dog.”

The Toy and Miniature were favorite pets in the most renowned houses of Europe. Paintings depict Napoleon returning from the wars of 1812 to greet his Queen and Poodle. The dog was a favorite also with the French troops. Because of the breed’s versatility and acute reasoning powers, he holds the premium position among all known breeds.

COAT-OF-ARMS

At the peak of the CREST rests the fleur-de-lis, honoring the Poodle as the National Dog of France. Immediately below is the ancient symbol of the theatre as the dog was used extensively as a trick dog delighting millions of adults and children. The MANTLING which curves around the top of the SHIELD, represents water and frames the words “Chien Canne” meaning “duck dog” in French. In the center SHIELD a classic Poodle head is portrayed. The SUPPORTERS on either side of the SHIELD represent the discipline, obedience, and reasoning powers of this versatile animal. The cushion at the bottom of the left STANDARD symbolizes the warmth and affection of the Poodle in the home.
