Another trade card from Stollwerck’s Animal Kingdom Collectors Album, this one advertises their ‘Mocha Chocolate.’ The illustration features an inquisitive tree frog in a glass jar adjacent to a flowering cyclamen houseplant. The back of the card discusses tree frog habitat requirements and their attentive nature, like their ability to detect oncoming rain.

The Tree Frog in a Jar

Many animals have a keen sense of weather changes, and attentive observers such as shepherds and hunters can accurately predict upcoming weather by observing the behavior of certain birds and mammals. It has long been noticed, for example, that the tree frog perches high in bushes during fine weather but hides on the ground when rain is imminent.

This behavior is said to persist even when the frog is kept in a jar, provided it has opportunities to climb. However, the old-style tree frog jars, as depicted in our image, are not recommended, as they offer the animal too little room for movement.
It is much better to house the tree frog, or several of its kind, in a spacious terrarium filled with plants. They can be fed with flies and small spiders. In winter, the tree frog buries itself in moss to hibernate.
