19th Century Photo of Young Girl with Rare G. Gunther Birdcage
A small CDV (Carte de Vista) 19th-century image of a young girl standing next to a bird cage with her pet canary inside. This card looks to be from the 1850-1860s, and the cage with its rotating feeder holders, 3- tiers, and footed base looks to me to be a rare G. Gunther cage from New York. The best way to identify a rare cage of this era is from the shape of the wood dowel on top of the cage. Gottlob Gunther immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in order to manufacture cages for the famous Riche family animal importers. (Largest canary importers in the U.S. at one time.)
