An Open Letter to Canary Breeders

Jan 9, 2026

An advertisement from the R.T. French Company (makers of French’s Mustard) during wartime (WWII) asking for people to “breed more canaries” to make up for the gap in imports during the war. The R.T. French Company put a huge effort in marketing canaries, even advertising in 19 national magazines during this time. Sadly, R.T. French eventually discontinued all their canary product line by the year 1950.

Letter from February 1944 edition of Canary Journal.

Two ads for French’s bird products from the company’s 1942 booklet titled Keep a Song in Your Home.
